The SAP career path for a fresher: from ₹25K at TCS to ₹25 LPA consultant

A concrete SAP roadmap for a CS grad stuck at a service company — certifications, salary bands, and the exact Udemy courses to take.

You joined TCS in June 2025. B.Tech CS, RKGIT, 2024 batch. You waited almost a year on the bench-adjacent limbo most of us wait in, and now they've put you in SAP training with a healthcare-domain flavour. You take home about ₹25,000 a month. Rent, mess bill, the EMI on the phone you bought to feel like an adult — and there's nothing left. You are twenty-two or twenty-three, you can code, and you are seriously thinking about walking out to start a sand-supply business or lease a patch of farmland because at least that feels like ownership.

I want to talk you out of the escape. Not the ambition — keep the ambition. The escape.

I'm Chirag. I write software, I run 50-plus open-source repos, and I've spent enough time inside and around the corporate SAP world to tell you something you won't hear from a career-coach reel: the boring skill they're shoving at you right now is one of the highest-ROI things an Indian IT fresher can own. Sand and agriculture are capital-heavy, weather-exposed, relationship-gated businesses where a fresh grad with ₹25K in the bank gets eaten alive. SAP is a skill you can compound with almost zero capital, on someone else's payroll, starting Monday.

This is Part 1 of a 3-part series on getting un-stuck. Part 1 is SAP because that's the door already open in front of you. Let's walk through it properly.

Why I'm not telling you to chase the "cool" job

Every LinkedIn post tells freshers to learn React, ship an AI app, become a founder. Good advice for some. Terrible advice as an escape, because escape is emotional and escape burns your runway.

Here's the unglamorous truth about SAP: it runs the back office of a frightening share of the large companies on Earth. Manufacturing, pharma, retail, banking, oil, government. When a company runs its finance, supply chain, and HR on SAP, ripping it out costs crores and years — so they don't. They keep paying people who understand it. That stickiness is exactly why the pay is good and the work is stable. It's not cool. It pays rent for decades.

You already got selected into the pipeline that most SAP aspirants pay coaching institutes ₹40K–₹1.5L to enter. You're inside. Don't jog out the fire exit into a sandpit.

The real salary numbers (INR, no hype)

Let me give you honest bands for India, 2026. These vary by city, employer tier, and module, but they're grounded, not aspirational:

  • Fresher / 0–1 yr (service company like TCS/Infosys/Accenture): ₹3–5 LPA. You're roughly here. ₹25K/month is ~₹3–3.6 LPA in hand-ish territory once you account for the total package.
  • 2–3 yrs, certified, on live projects: ₹8–15 LPA. The jump happens when you stop being "in training" and become "billable on a client project," ideally with a certification on your CV.
  • 5+ yrs, genuine consultant: ₹18–30 LPA. Techno-functional consultants and strong ABAP/BTP developers cluster here.
  • Senior consultant / architect / niche module (SuccessFactors, S/4HANA migration, BTP): ₹30–50 LPA+.
  • Freelance / contract / onshore (US, EU, Middle East): the number stops being an Indian salary and becomes a day rate. Contract SAP consultants abroad bill in a range that dwarfs the above. This is the "golden handcuff" tier — more on that later.

Compare that to the sand or agri business, where after two years you might — might — clear ₹3–4 LPA of actual profit while carrying all the risk, all the capital, and all the sleepless nights. SAP hands you a rising, low-risk curve while someone else insures the downside.

The SAP landscape in 2026 (what you're actually looking at)

SAP is not one thing. It's a stack. Understand the map so you can pick a lane instead of drowning in acronyms.

S/4HANA — the current-generation ERP suite, running on the in-memory HANA database. The whole industry is mid-migration from the old ECC system to S/4HANA, and SAP has pushed the ECC end-of-mainstream-maintenance deadline out to 2027 (with extended paid support to 2030). Translation: for the next several years, thousands of companies must migrate, and migration projects need people. This is a tailwind blowing directly at your career.

SAP BTP (Business Technology Platform) — SAP's cloud/PaaS layer: extensions, integration, analytics, and a place to build side-apps without touching the core ERP. This is where modern SAP development lives.

ABAP — the classic SAP programming language. Still everywhere. On BTP it's evolved into "ABAP Cloud" / RAP (RESTful ABAP Programming model). If you can already code in Java/C/Python, ABAP is learnable fast.

Fiori / UI5 — SAP's modern front-end. SAPUI5 is the JavaScript framework; Fiori is the design system and app catalog. This is where your web instincts pay off directly — it's HTML/CSS/JS under a corporate skin.

CAP (Cloud Application Programming model) — SAP's opinionated, Node.js/Java-based framework for building services and apps on BTP. If you like modern backend dev, CAP is the most "normal software engineering" corner of SAP.

Functional modules — the business-logic configuration side, no coding:

  • FICO — Finance & Controlling (the biggest, most in-demand functional module).
  • MM — Materials Management / procurement.
  • SD — Sales & Distribution.
  • HCM / SuccessFactors — Human Capital; SuccessFactors is the cloud HR suite and pays extremely well because supply is thin.

Your healthcare-domain training likely bolts onto one of these (often a mix of MM/SD for supply chain or an industry solution). Keep the domain knowledge — "SAP consultant who understands hospital/pharma operations" is more valuable than a generic one.

Technical vs Functional — pick technical (or techno-functional)

Two broad tracks:

  • Functional consultant — you configure modules, gather requirements, map business processes to SAP. Little to no coding. Great for commerce/finance backgrounds.
  • Technical developer — ABAP, BTP, CAP, Fiori/UI5. You build and extend.

You are a CS grad who can already write code. Lead with the technical track. Your degree is a moat here that a B.Com functional consultant will never cross. ABAP, RAP, CAP, and UI5 development are directly downstream of skills you already have.

But the highest-paid, most durable profile is techno-functional: a developer who also understands the business process of at least one module. That's the ₹25–30 LPA consultant. So: technical first, then pick one functional module (given your training, whatever they staff you on — likely FICO or an MM/SD flavour) and learn its business logic too. Code + domain = the combination that clients pay a premium for.

How to actually leverage being AT TCS

This is the part most people waste. You are sitting on three free assets. Use every one.

1. Certification on their dime. Big service companies run internal SAP training, exam vouchers, and Learning Hub access. SAP certifications are expensive if you self-fund — an exam voucher runs roughly ₹40,000–₹55,000 in India, and Learning Hub subscriptions cost more. Inside TCS, much of this is subsidised or free through internal programs. Get certified while someone else pays. This alone is worth staying a year or two for.

2. Get staffed on a real project — escape training limbo. "Training" is a trap if you sit in it. The salary jump comes from being billable. The moment training ends, be aggressive: talk to your RMG (resource management), your TL, anyone allocating people. Say yes to any live S/4HANA project even if it's boring. One year of real-project experience on your CV is worth more than three years of "trained in SAP but never deployed."

3. Real enterprise exposure you can't buy. You'll see how a genuine multi-crore SAP system runs — the tickets, the transports, the change requests, the go-lives. That context is the thing coaching-institute grads lack and clients screen for.

The play is simple: use TCS as a paid bootcamp, extract certification + real project experience over 2–3 years, then jump. That jump — from a service company to a mid-tier SAP consultancy, product company, or direct client — is where ₹5 LPA becomes ₹12–15 LPA in one move.

The certifications that matter (and rough costs)

Don't collect certs like Pokémon. A few move the needle:

  • SAP Certified Associate – Back-End Developer – ABAP Cloud — the modern ABAP developer cert. Your bread-and-butter if you go technical.
  • SAP Certified Associate – SAP BTP Extend / Developer (CAP + Fiori) — proves you can build on the modern platform.
  • SAP Certified Associate – S/4HANA (module-specific, e.g. Sourcing & Procurement / Financial Accounting) — the functional-side proof for whichever module you land on.
  • SAP Certified Development Associate (SAPUI5 / Fiori) — front-end developer credential.

Self-funded, budget roughly ₹40K–₹55K per exam voucher in India (they refreshed the exam/subscription model recently, so confirm current pricing before you pay). Which is exactly why you get TCS to pay. One cert, employer-funded, plus one real project = the CV that clears the 2-to-3-year jump.

A realistic 2–3 year plan from ₹25K to a consulting jump

No fantasy timelines. Here's a grounded arc:

Months 0–6 (now): Finish TCS training seriously. In parallel, start the Udemy roadmap below at your own pace — 45 min a night. Goal: be dangerous in ABAP and comfortable reading Fiori/UI5. Pick your target module based on staffing.

Months 6–12: Get onto a live project. Push hard on allocation. Start the internal certification process — target your first cert (ABAP Cloud or a module associate cert) funded by TCS. Begin a small public portfolio: put a couple of BTP/CAP/UI5 side-projects on GitHub. (Yes, SAP work can be shown off — RAP/CAP apps, UI5 apps, ABAP samples.)

Months 12–24: Certified + billable. Now you're a "2-year SAP resource with a live project and a cert." Internally, negotiate for a better role/band. Externally, this is when your CV starts getting recruiter calls. Deepen into techno-functional — learn the business process of your module cold.

Months 24–36: Make the jump. Move to a specialist SAP consultancy, a product company, or land a client-facing consultant role. Realistic landing: ₹10–15 LPA, sometimes more with an onsite or a hot module. From there, 5-year-consultant money (₹18–30 LPA) is a matter of stacking projects.

Three years. Zero capital risked. Someone else paid for your training and your certs. That is a fundamentally better bet than a sand truck.

Udemy roadmap (beginner → advanced)

Ordered from foundation to specialisation. Instructor names given where well-known. Course titles on Udemy shift and get renamed, and instructors publish updated editions — search the title + instructor and pick the most recently-updated, highest-rated version. Wait for Udemy's frequent ₹400–₹600 sales; never pay full price.

Foundational — SAP orientation & business context

  1. "SAP - Beginner Basic Skills to Get Started with SAP ERP" — by Abhishek Saxena / SPeCiaL Learning-type intro courses. Purpose: understand what SAP is as a user before you build on it. Foundational.
  2. "SAP S/4HANA – Introduction & Overview" — any well-rated S/4HANA overview (look for courses covering Fiori launchpad, navigation, and the ECC→S/4 shift). Foundational; sets the map.

Core technical — ABAP

  1. "Learn SAP ABAP Objects – Online Training Course" — by Peter Moxon (Udemy Business bestseller). The classic, thorough ABAP entry point. Foundational for the technical track.
  2. "SAP ABAP Programming For Beginners - Online SAP ABAP Course" — by Peter Moxon. Complements the above; hands-on ABAP fundamentals.
  3. "Complete ABAP" or "SAP ABAP Complete Course" — by Ganesh Padala (very active SAP instructor). Broader coverage including reports, ALV, modularization. Core.
  4. "SAP ABAP on HANA + ABAP RESTful (RAP)" — by Ganesh Padala or similar. This is the modern ABAP you must know for S/4HANA (CDS views, AMDP, RAP). Specialised but essential in 2026.

Front-end — Fiori / UI5

  1. "SAPUI5 (Fiori) - Development from scratch" — a hands-on SAPUI5 course; look for one covering MVC, OData binding, and Fiori Elements. Your web skills transfer directly here. Core-technical.
  2. "SAP Fiori Overview / Fiori Launchpad Configuration" — a shorter functional-leaning Fiori course so you understand deployment and the launchpad, not just coding. Complementary.

Modern platform — BTP & CAP

  1. "SAP BTP (Business Technology Platform) – Fundamentals" — an overview of BTP services, Cloud Foundry, and the cockpit. Specialised; the modern lane.
  2. "SAP Cloud Application Programming Model (CAP) – Full Course" — CAP with Node.js, building services and Fiori UIs on BTP. The most "normal software engineering" SAP course you'll take. Specialised, high-value.
  3. "SAP Integration Suite / BTP Integration" — for wiring SAP to the outside world (APIs, iFlows). Specialised; pairs well with a developer profile.

OData & Gateway (the glue)

  1. "SAP OData and SAP Gateway – Complete Course" — by Ganesh Padala or similar. OData services are the backbone connecting ABAP/CAP back-ends to Fiori front-ends. Core-technical; do this alongside UI5.

Functional module intros (pick based on your staffing)

  1. "SAP FICO (Financial Accounting & Controlling) – Complete Training" — the highest-demand functional module; even technical devs benefit from FICO literacy. Foundational for techno-functional.
  2. "SAP MM (Materials Management) – End to End" — procurement and inventory; strong fit if your healthcare domain leans supply chain. Module-specific.
  3. "SAP SD (Sales & Distribution) – Complete Course" — order-to-cash; another common staffing landing. Module-specific.
  4. "SAP SuccessFactors – Employee Central" / "SF Fundamentals" — the cloud-HR suite; thin talent supply, strong pay. Specialised; consider once your technical base is solid.

Advanced / capstone

  1. "SAP S/4HANA Migration / Conversion – Practical" — understanding the ECC→S/4 conversion process makes you directly useful on the migration projects flooding the market. Specialised, career-accelerating.
  2. "SAP BTP + CAP + Fiori Full-Stack Project" — any end-to-end project course that ties BTP, CAP, and a Fiori UI into one deployable app. This is your portfolio-builder. Capstone.

How to run this roadmap: #1–#8 in your first 6–9 months (foundation + ABAP + UI5 + OData). #9–#12 next as you touch BTP on the job. #13–#16 in parallel based on your module. #17–#18 as capstones before you jump. Don't buy all eighteen at once — buy the next one when you finish the current one.

The honest caveats

I promised no hype, so here are the real downsides:

Golden handcuffs are real. Once you're a well-paid SAP consultant, the pay makes it psychologically hard to ever leave for a lower-paid but "more fun" domain. Some people feel trapped by their own comp. Go in knowing this. The counter: use SAP as the stable engine that funds your other ambitions — which is exactly why this is a series, not a single track.

It's less "cool" than modern web/AI. You won't be shipping a viral Next.js app. SAP is enterprise, ticket-driven, change-controlled, and sometimes maddeningly slow. If your identity is tied to bleeding-edge tech, SAP will chafe. But cool doesn't pay rent for twenty years; SAP does.

Service-company culture can grind. Bench, allocation politics, night calls with onshore clients, rigid processes. It's real. The plan above is designed to get you through it to the consultant tier fast, not to keep you there forever.

The market shifts. S/4HANA migration is a multi-year tailwind, but automation and AI are coming for the rote parts of SAP work too. Which is precisely why you keep coding, keep building publicly, and keep learning — so you're the consultant who automates SAP work, not the one replaced by it.

The through-line

Don't escape into a capital-heavy business you don't understand. Compound the skill someone is paying you to learn right now. You have software ability most SAP people lack, and you're being handed SAP training most software people never get. That intersection — a CS grad who codes and knows SAP — is rare and expensive. Stack certification + real project + a module domain over 2–3 years, and ₹25K/month becomes a ₹10–15 LPA jump, then a ₹25 LPA consultant seat.

Keep the side-projects going. Keep the GitHub alive. The corporate SAP job is the boring, reliable engine; your open-source and AI work is the accelerator. That's the whole strategy of this series.
