Free Healthcare Bhubaneswar Part 8: Pharmacy Guide & Jan Aushadhi
Where to collect free medicines in Bhubaneswar, where to find Jan Aushadhi Kendras for 50-90% cheaper generics, and how the DDC system works.
Part 8: Free Pharmacy & Jan Aushadhi in Bhubaneswar
Medicines are the single largest out-of-pocket expense for most patients. This part covers how to get medicines for free or at massive discounts in Bhubaneswar.
Option 1: Free Medicines at Government Hospital DDCs (Niramaya)
What is a DDC?
A Drug Distribution Centre (DDC) is a pharmacy counter inside every government hospital in Odisha. It is operated under the Niramaya scheme and provides medicines free of cost.
Where are the DDCs in Bhubaneswar?
- Capital Hospital — DDC inside the hospital complex. Operates 24/7.
- Hi-Tech Medical College — DDC near the OPD block.
- Every UCHC and UPHC — Has a smaller DDC for basic medicines.
- District Headquarters Hospital (if you visit Cuttack or other districts).
How it works:
- Get a prescription from a doctor at the same government hospital.
- Take it to the DDC counter.
- Show your prescription. The pharmacist dispenses the medicines.
- Cost: ₹0.
Important Notes:
- The DDC stocks only medicines in the Odisha State Essential Drug List (EDL). This covers 500+ drugs across most therapeutic categories.
- If a specific medicine is out of stock, ask the pharmacist for an alternative salt or check back the next day.
- AIIMS Bhubaneswar does NOT operate under Niramaya. AIIMS has its own pharmacy with subsidized (not free) medicines.
Option 2: Jan Aushadhi Kendra (50-90% Cheaper)
If the DDC doesn’t have your medicine, or if you have a prescription from a private doctor, the next best option is a Jan Aushadhi Kendra.
What is it?
Jan Aushadhi Kendras sell unbranded generic medicines that are 50% to 90% cheaper than branded alternatives. The medicines are WHO-GMP certified and NABL tested.
Locations in Bhubaneswar:
- Baramunda: Plot No-A/32, Ruchika Market, Baramunda Housing Board Colony.
- Kalinga Nagar: K-4, L.I.G-158, Kalinga Vihar, Subudhipur.
- Sahid Nagar and other areas — use the Jan Aushadhi Sugam App to find the nearest one.
Price Examples:
| Medicine | Branded MRP | Jan Aushadhi Price |
|---|---|---|
| Atorvastatin 10mg (30 tabs) | ₹150-200 | ₹15-25 |
| Metformin 500mg (30 tabs) | ₹80-120 | ₹10-15 |
| Amlodipine 5mg (30 tabs) | ₹60-90 | ₹5-10 |
| Omeprazole 20mg (30 caps) | ₹100-150 | ₹12-18 |
| Suvidha Sanitary Pads (4 pcs) | ₹30-50 (branded) | ₹4 |
Option 3: Private Pharmacies (Last Resort)
If neither the DDC nor Jan Aushadhi has your medicine, you will need to visit a private pharmacy.
- Tip: Always ask the pharmacist for the generic version of the medicine. By law, pharmacists are required to offer a generic alternative if available.
- Major chains in Bhubaneswar: Apollo Pharmacy, MedPlus, Netmeds (delivery).
Decision Flowchart
- Do you have a government hospital prescription? → Go to the DDC (Niramaya). Free.
