Part 2.2: The Blockers & Modern Acids — Tranexamic & Azelaic Acid

The second tier of skin-brightening efficacy. We rank Tranexamic Acid, Azelaic Acid, and Cysteamine, including Indian brand prices and affordable Jan Aushadhi options.

Part 2.2: The Blockers & Modern Acids

Welcome to the second installment of our ingredient rankings. While Part 2.1 dealt with the “Heavy Artillery” (Prescriptions), this part focuses on the Smart Blockers. These ingredients are often safer than Hydroquinone but still provide medical-grade results when used correctly.

These are ranked by their “Efficacy” (How well they work for Indian skin).

🏆 Efficacy Rank #6: Cysteamine

The “Modern Rival” to Hydroquinone

Cysteamine is a natural compound found in human cells. It is currently one of the most exciting developments in dermatology.

How it Works

It is a biological regulator of melanin. It reduces the activity of tyrosinase and peroxidase (another enzyme that triggers pigment). It is nearly as effective as Hydroquinone but doesn’t carry the risk of Ochronosis.

💰 Price & Brands in India (2025)

Cysteamine is relatively new and expensive.

  • Brand: Cyspera (International/Premium).
    • Price: ₹7,000 – ₹10,000 (Imported).
  • Indian Brands: Cysteamine Cream by various dermatology labs (e.g., Sistamine).
    • Price: ₹1,800 – ₹2,500 for a 30g tube.
  • Jan Aushadhi Kendra: Not yet available.

🥈 Efficacy Rank #7: Thiamidol (Isobutylamido Thiazolyl Resorcinol)

The “Eucerin Secret”

Developed by Beiersdorf (owners of Eucerin and Nivea), Thiamidol is the result of testing 50,000 different compounds on human tyrosinase.

How it Works

Most brightening ingredients were originally tested on mushroom enzymes. Thiamidol was specifically engineered for human skin. It is extremely effective at blocking melanin at its source.

💰 Price & Brands in India

  • Brand: Eucerin Anti-Pigment range.
    • Price: ₹2,500 – ₹3,500.
  • Indian Market: Some Indian brands are starting to license or find similar resorcinol derivatives.
  • Jan Aushadhi: Not available.

🥉 Efficacy Rank #8: Tranexamic Acid

The “Melasma Specialist”

Originally used as a drug to stop bleeding during surgery, doctors noticed that patients taking it had brighter skin.

How it Works

It works by blocking the interaction between melanocytes (pigment cells) and keratinocytes (skin cells). It is particularly effective for vascular melasma (pigmentation with redness).

💰 Price & Brands in India (2025)

  • Cosmetic: Minimalist 3% Tranexamic Acid Serum, The Derma Co 3% Tranexamic Acid.
    • Price: ₹500 – ₹700.
  • Pharma: Tyrodin (Micro Labs).
    • Price: ₹400 – ₹600.
  • Jan Aushadhi Kendra:
    • Availability: Mostly available as oral tablets (₹20-₹40). Topical creams are rare but being introduced.

4. Azelaic Acid

Efficacy Rank: #9 — The “PIH Specialist”

Found naturally in grains like barley and wheat, Azelaic Acid is a multi-tasking powerhouse for Indian skin.

How it Works

It is a “selective” inhibitor. It only targets overactive melanocytes. If your skin is normal, it won’t do much, but if you have a dark spot from a pimple, it attacks it aggressively. It is also anti-bacterial (fights acne) and anti-inflammatory.

💰 Price & Brands in India

  • Pharma: Aziderm (Micro Labs), Picspot (Galderma).
    • Price: ₹250 – ₹450 (for 15g, 10% or 20%).
  • Jan Aushadhi Kendra:
    • Availability: High (Generic Azelaic Acid 20%).
    • Price: ₹50 – ₹80. (Compare this to ₹350 for Aziderm!).

5. Niacinamide (Vitamin B3)

Efficacy Rank: #10 — The “All-Rounder”

Niacinamide is perhaps the most famous brightening ingredient today.

How it Works

Unlike the others, it doesn’t stop melanin production. Instead, it blocks the transfer of melanin from the melanocytes to the skin surface. It’s like stopping the delivery trucks from reaching the warehouse.

💰 Price & Brands in India

  • Brands: Minimalist 5%/10% Niacinamide, The Ordinary Niacinamide.
    • Price: ₹500 – ₹600.
  • Pharma: Niacinamide Gel (Generic).
    • Price: ₹150 – ₹300.
  • Jan Aushadhi Kendra:
    • Price: ₹30 – ₹50 (Usually found in combination with other vitamins).
