Part 2.4: The Surface Renewers — AHAs, BHAs & PHAs
Exfoliation is the secret to instant radiance. We rank Glycolic, Lactic, and Salicylic acids, their efficacy for Indian skin, and the best affordable pharmacy options in India.
Part 2.4: The Surface Renewers
If you have used the blockers from the previous chapters but your skin still looks “dull,” it’s likely because you have a buildup of dead, pigmented skin cells on the surface. In this chapter, we rank the Exfoliants.
In the Indian climate, dust and pollution stick to the natural oils on our face, creating a “grey” layer. These ingredients dissolve the “glue” holding that layer together, revealing the bright skin underneath.
These are ranked by their “Efficacy” (Efficacy Rank #18 to #23).
🏆 Efficacy Rank #18: Glycolic Acid (AHA)
The “Surface Powerhouse”
Derived from sugarcane, Glycolic Acid has the smallest molecular size of all AHAs, allowing it to penetrate the deepest.
How it Works
It dissolves the bonds between dead skin cells. In Indian skin, it is excellent for removing a sun tan and smoothing out rough texture. However, because it penetrates deeply, it can be irritating.
💰 Price & Brands in India (2025)
- Pharma: Glyco-6 or Glyco-12 (Micro Labs). This is a cult favourite among Indian dermatologists.
- Price: ₹200 – ₹350 for 30g.
- Cosmetic: Minimalist 8% Glycolic Acid Liquid Exfoliant.
- Price: ₹450 – ₹600.
- Jan Aushadhi Kendra:
- Availability: High (Generic Glycolic Acid 6% Cream).
- Price: ₹40 – ₹60.
🥈 Efficacy Rank #19: Lactic Acid (AHA)
The “Gentle Hydrator”
Originally found in sour milk (and the secret to Cleopatra’s legendary baths), Lactic Acid is a larger molecule than Glycolic.
How it Works
It exfoliates the surface but also acts as a Humectant (it pulls water into the skin). For Indians with dry skin or those living in North India’s dry winters, Lactic Acid is superior to Glycolic. It provides a “glow” without the stinging.
💰 Price & Brands in India
- Brands: The Ordinary Lactic Acid 10%, Minimalist Lactic Acid 10%.
- Price: ₹600 – ₹800.
- Jan Aushadhi: Often found in combination moisturizing lotions.
- Price: ₹30 – ₹50.
🥉 Efficacy Rank #20: Salicylic Acid (BHA)
The “Pore Deep-Cleaner”
If your dullness is caused by oily skin and clogged pores, AHAs won’t help. You need a BHA.
How it Works
Salicylic Acid is oil-soluble. It goes inside the pore to dissolve sebum and dead skin. For Indian teenagers and adults with acne-prone skin, this is the #1 ingredient to prevent the dark marks (PIH) before they even start.
💰 Price & Brands in India (2025)
- Pharma: Saslic / Saslic DS (Cipla) Foaming Face Wash.
- Price: ₹300 – ₹500.
- Jan Aushadhi Kendra:
- Availability: Very High (Generic Salicylic Acid Foaming Face Wash).
- Price: ₹45 – ₹70. (Incredible savings compared to Saslic).
4. Mandelic Acid
Efficacy Rank: #21 — The Safety Champion
Derived from bitter almonds, Mandelic Acid has a very large molecular size.
Why it’s Great for India
Because it is a large molecule, it penetrates the skin slowly. This means it is very unlikely to cause the “Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation” that sometimes happens if you use Glycolic Acid too aggressively on dark Indian skin.
💰 Price & Brands in India
- Brands: Minimalist 10% Mandelic Acid.
- Price: ₹500 – ₹700.
5. PHAs (Gluconolactone / Lactobionic Acid)
Efficacy Rank: #22 — The Sensitive Skin Solution
PHAs are the “cousins” of AHAs. They are ultra-gentle.
💰 Price & Brands in India
- Brands: The Derma Co 7% PHA Gentle Face Toner.
- Price: ₹400 – ₹600.
6. Papain (Papaya Enzyme)
Efficacy Rank: #23 — The Natural Exfoliant
Found in Papaya fruit, this is an enzyme that “eats” dead skin cells. It is less predictable than acids but very popular in traditional Indian face packs.
