Part 2.8: The Medical Risks — Steroids & Dangerous Ingredients

Identifying the harmful and risky ingredients often found in the Indian 'fairness' market. We cover Steroids, Mercury, and Monobenzone, with warnings on skin thinning and poisoning.

Part 2.8: The Medical Risks

In the final chapter of our ingredient analysis, we must talk about the “Shadow Market.” In India, because drug laws are loosely enforced, many people buy extremely powerful medical chemicals and use them as daily face creams.

These ingredients provide instant results (sometimes in 3–5 days), but the cost is often permanent damage to your skin and health. These are ranked by their “Efficacy for Whitening”, but marked with a RED FLAG for danger.

🚩 Efficacy Rank #42: Monobenzone (Benoquin)

The “Permanent” Whitener

This is the chemical famously associated with extreme depigmentation.

🔴 THE DANGER

Monobenzone is not a brightening agent; it is a depigmenting agent. It permanently destroys melanocytes. It is medical-grade and ONLY approved for patients with Vitiligo who wish to depigment their remaining normal skin. Using this for “cosmetic” whitening will leave you with patchy, chalk-white skin that has zero protection from the sun. It increases skin cancer risk by 1000%.

🚩 Efficacy Rank #43: Corticosteroids (Clobetasol, Betamethasone)

The “Skin Thinners”

In India, you will find these in creams like Panderm, Derma-KT, and Fourderm. They are often sold at local pharmacies for ₹30–₹50.

🔴 THE DANGER

Steroids reduce inflammation instantly, making your skin look “pale” and “clear” for a week. But with long-term use:

  1. Skin Atrophy: Your skin becomes as thin as cigarette paper.
  2. Steroid Acne: Massive, painful breakouts that don’t respond to normal acne meds.
  3. Hirsutism: You grow thick, dark facial hair.
  4. Topical Steroid Withdrawal (TSW): When you stop, your face turns bright red and burns like it’s on fire.

🚩 Efficacy Rank #44: Mercury (In “Overnight” Creams)

The Silent Poison

Mercury is often hidden in unbranded “Magic” fairness creams sold on social media or in local bazaars in India.

🔴 THE DANGER

Mercury is a neurotoxin. It blocks melanin extremely well, but it is absorbed through the skin into your bloodstream. It can cause kidney damage, nervous system disorders, and birth defects if used during pregnancy. If a cream claims to make you “3 shades fairer in 3 days,” it likely contains Mercury.

🚩 Efficacy Rank #45: Mequinol

The Hydroquinone Alternative

Mequinol is a phenol derivative.

🔴 THE DANGER

It is used to treat solar lentigines but is very unstable. If used over large areas, it can cause “Halo” depigmentation (white spots around the treated area).

🚩 Efficacy Rank #46: High-Concentration TCA/Phenol Peels

The “Burning” Faders

🔴 THE DANGER

While 10% TCA is safe in a doctor’s clinic, many Indians buy 30% or 50% TCA peels online to do at home. In Indian skin (Fitzpatrick IV-V), a deep chemical burn always results in “Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation” (PIH) that is 10 times darker than the original spot.
