Cancer treatment can cost ₹5-50 Lakh in private hospitals. But you can get it for free or near-free at these institutions.


Top Centres for Free/Subsidized Cancer Treatment

1. Tata Memorial Centre (TMC), Mumbai — India’s #1

  • Has a “General” category system. If assessed as unable to pay → treatment is free/heavily subsidized.
  • World-class oncology: surgery, chemo, radiation, BMT.
  • Medical Social Worker (MSW) department helps patients navigate financial aid.
  • Network hospitals in Varanasi, Sangrur, Visakhapatnam, Guwahati.

2. AIIMS New Delhi — National Cancer Institute

  • Advanced cancer care including proton therapy.
  • Subsidized for all. Free emergency.
  • OPD: ₹10 registration.

3. Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology, Bengaluru

  • Government-supported. High-volume, affordable cancer care.
  • BPL patients: free treatment.

4. Cancer Institute (WIA), Adyar, Chennai

  • Charitable institution. Free treatment for a large % of patients.

5. Regional Cancer Centres (RCCs)

  • Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala) — One of India’s best.
  • Kolkata (CNCI) — Chittaranjan National Cancer Institute.

How to Get Free Cancer Treatment:

  1. Get diagnosed at a government hospital (free/cheap).
  2. Go to a Tata Memorial/RCC. Meet the Medical Social Worker.
  3. Submit income documents — income certificate, Aadhaar, BPL card.
  4. Get classified as “No Charge” or “Subsidized” category.
  5. If eligible for PM-JAY, use your Ayushman card for cashless treatment.
