Puri Travel Guide Part 1: The Master Departure Plan from Niladri Vihar, Bhubaneswar

Your definitive guide to starting a pilgrimage from Niladri Vihar Sector 5, Lane 5, Bhubaneswar to Jagannath Puri. Learn about Mo Bus timings, auto-rickshaw fares, and the smartest early morning strategy for May 2026.

Part 1: The Master Departure Plan — From Niladri Vihar to the Holy City of Puri

There is a peculiar magic that descends upon Odisha in the pre-dawn hours. The air is thick with the scent of jasmine and the distant, rhythmic clang of temple bells. It is in this ethereal window — when the rest of the world sleeps — that the most seasoned pilgrims begin their journey to Shree Jagannath Puri, one of the four sacred Char Dhams of Hinduism. For over a thousand years, devotees have walked, ridden, and sailed to catch a glimpse of the wooden deities — Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Subhadra — at their eternal abode.

Today, you are about to embark on this very journey. Not from some distant city, but from the quiet residential lanes of Sector 5, Lane 5, Niladri Vihar, Bhubaneswar — the smart city capital of Odisha. And you are travelling with the most important person in your life: your mother.

This is not just a travel guide. This is a war plan — meticulously researched, web-verified, and designed to ensure that every rupee is accounted for, every minute is optimised, and your mother’s comfort is the non-negotiable priority.

Your Starting Point: The Geography of Niladri Vihar

Niladri Vihar is a well-planned residential township situated in the northeastern part of Bhubaneswar, near the Patia-Nandankanan corridor. Specifically, Sector 5, Lane 5 places you in the heart of this colony, within comfortable walking distance of the Powergrid Square — one of the most important transit junctions in this part of the city.

Powergrid Square is where the main arterial road connecting Patia, Nandankanan, and Chandrasekharpur converges. This is your primary access point to the city’s public transport network. Understanding this geography is critical because every option for reaching Puri starts with getting out of Niladri Vihar and onto one of these main roads.

The Walk to Powergrid Square

From Lane 5, Sector 5, the walk to the nearest bus stop at or near Powergrid Square is approximately 800 metres to 1.2 kilometres, depending on which side of the sector you are on. At a comfortable walking pace with your mother, this will take roughly 10 to 15 minutes. In the cool pre-dawn air of May (around 27°C at 5:00 AM), this walk is pleasant and manageable.

If walking is not feasible, a pre-booked auto-rickshaw from within the colony to Powergrid Square should cost no more than ₹30 to ₹50. However, getting an auto at 5:00 AM inside the colony is unreliable. This is why advance booking (via a local auto driver’s phone number, or through apps like Rapido or Uber Auto) is strongly recommended. The night before your trip, save at least two local auto driver numbers in your phone.

The 5:00 AM Question: Will You Get a Mo Bus?

The Capital Region Urban Transport (CRUT) operates the Mo Bus (now rebranded as Ama Bus in some routes) network across Bhubaneswar and Cuttack. It is Odisha’s flagship public bus service — modern, air-conditioned, GPS-tracked, and remarkably affordable.

The relevant route for you is Route 9, which connects the Patia/Niladri Vihar corridor to the Bhubaneswar Railway Station (Master Canteen area). This route passes through or near the Powergrid Square bus stops.

The Hard Truth About 5:00 AM

Mo Bus services do not operate at 5:00 AM.

The first buses on most routes, including Route 9, typically begin their runs between 6:00 AM and 6:30 AM. This is a critical piece of information that many first-time planners miss. If you walk to Powergrid Square at 5:00 AM expecting a bus, you will be standing alone on a dimly lit road with no bus in sight.

This means that for a 5:00 AM departure from Niladri Vihar, the Mo Bus is categorically not an option. You need an alternative strategy.

What If You Delay to 6:00 AM?

If you are flexible enough to push your departure to 6:15 AM, the calculus changes dramatically. The first Route 9 bus from the Patia side arrives near Powergrid Square between 6:15 AM and 6:30 AM. This bus will take you to Bhubaneswar Railway Station (Master Canteen) in approximately 30 to 40 minutes, factoring in stops.

Mo Bus Fare: The fare from Niladri Vihar to the Bhubaneswar Railway Station is approximately ₹10 to ₹15 per person — extraordinarily cheap.

However, this 6:15 AM departure means you would reach the station by 7:00 AM, catch a train by 7:30 AM to 8:00 AM, and arrive in Puri only by 9:30 AM to 10:00 AM. In May, this means you walk into the temple during the peak heat window, which is far from ideal for your mother.

The Mo Bus App: Your Secret Weapon

Even if you are not taking the Mo Bus at 5:00 AM, install the Mo Bus / Ama Bus app on your phone. It provides real-time GPS tracking of buses on all routes, which is invaluable for planning your return journey in the evening. You can see exactly when the next bus to Niladri Vihar will arrive at the railway station, saving you from waiting aimlessly.

The official Bhubaneswar One Helpline is 1929 — save this number. They provide immediate assistance on bus routes, timings, and service interruptions.

Since Mo Bus is out of the picture for a 5:00 AM start, the auto-rickshaw becomes your most reliable ally.

Option A: Auto to Bhubaneswar Railway Station

This is the single best option for your specific situation.

ParameterDetail
Distance8 to 10 km (via Jaydev Vihar / Nayapalli route)
Travel Time20 to 30 minutes (zero traffic at 5:00 AM)
Expected Fare₹150 to ₹250 (negotiated, not metered)
Arrival Time~5:30 AM

At 5:00 AM on a Saturday, Bhubaneswar’s roads are virtually empty. The usual traffic bottlenecks at Jaydev Vihar Square, Vani Vihar, and Rajmahal Square evaporate. Your auto will cruise through deserted streets, making this one of the most pleasant urban rides you will ever take.

Pro Tip: The night before (Friday evening), walk to the nearest auto stand near Powergrid Square or Niladri Vihar main road. Approach an auto driver and negotiate the fare for a 5:00 AM pickup the next morning. Most local drivers will agree to ₹150 to ₹200 for this pre-dawn trip. Exchange phone numbers and confirm the pickup time via a WhatsApp message.

Option B: Auto to Baramunda ISBT

If you plan to take a bus instead of a train (more on this in Part 2), your auto should head to the Baramunda Inter-State Bus Terminal (ISBT) instead.

ParameterDetail
Distance12 to 14 km (via NH-16)
Travel Time25 to 35 minutes
Expected Fare₹200 to ₹300
First Bus to Puri~5:30 AM to 6:00 AM (OSRTC / Ama Bus Route 51)

Baramunda ISBT is the most organised bus terminal in Bhubaneswar. Government OSRTC buses and Ama Bus Route 51 both depart from here for Puri. The terminal has seating, toilets, and a small tea stall that opens early. It is a far better experience than the chaotic boarding at Kalpana Square.

Option C: Auto to Kalpana Square

Kalpana Square is an old-fashioned bus pickup point where private and some government buses stop on their way to Puri. While it is closer to Niladri Vihar than Baramunda (about 7 km), it is not recommended for your situation.

Why Avoid Kalpana Square:

  • No guaranteed seating — buses are often already half-full by the time they reach Kalpana.
  • Confusing for first-timers — there is no organised queue or bay system.
  • No toilets or waiting area.
  • Higher chance of being overcharged by private bus operators.
  • Your mother will have to stand in the open waiting for a bus, which is not ideal.

The Verdict: Kalpana Square is for experienced, solo travellers who know the route. For a mother-son pilgrimage, stick with the Railway Station (for trains) or Baramunda ISBT (for buses).

The Ride-Hailing App Consideration

You might wonder: “Why not just book an Ola or Uber?”

At 5:00 AM on a Saturday in Niladri Vihar, ride-hailing availability is extremely low. The area is residential, and most app-based drivers do not start until 6:00 AM to 7:00 AM. You might get lucky, but relying solely on an app for your departure time is risky.

Rapido Bike Taxi: This is more available at early hours, but not suitable for two passengers, especially with your mother.

The Best Approach: Use a local, pre-arranged auto driver as your primary plan, and keep the Ola/Uber app open as a backup. If the auto does not show up by 5:10 AM, immediately open the app and book whatever is available.

What Should You Have Ready Before Leaving Home?

Before you step out of Lane 5 at 5:00 AM, ensure the following checklist is complete. This is not a generic list — this is specifically tailored for a mother-son day trip to Jagannath Puri in May:

The Essentials

  1. Aadhaar Card — For both you and your mother. While not routinely checked, it serves as definitive identity proof if questioned at the temple gate.
  2. Cash — Carry ₹2,000 to ₹3,000 in small denominations. The breakdown should be:
    • At least 10 notes of ₹10
    • At least 10 notes of ₹20
    • At least 5 notes of ₹50
    • At least 5 notes of ₹100
    • 1 or 2 notes of ₹500 (for emergencies)
    • Digital payments (UPI) work at some shops but not inside the temple or with rickshaws.
  3. Cotton Towel — A small gamcha (thin cotton towel). Essential for wiping sweat in the 33°C+ heat.
  4. Water Bottle — A 1-litre reusable bottle, filled. You will drink heavily. Note: you cannot take this inside the temple sanctum, but you can keep it at the locker counter.
  5. Umbrella — Non-negotiable in May. The sun is brutal between 9:00 AM and 4:00 PM.
  6. Sunscreen — SPF 30 or higher. Apply before leaving home and reapply at noon.
  7. Cap or Hat — Lightweight, breathable. Preferably cotton, not synthetic.
  8. A Small Cloth Pouch or Bag — For carrying cash and Aadhaar. Do not carry a leather wallet — leather is prohibited inside the temple.

What NOT to Carry

This list is equally critical:

  1. Laptop — Absolutely not. There is no place to store it safely, and electronic devices are banned inside the temple.
  2. Power Bank — Banned inside the temple.
  3. Smartwatch — Banned inside the temple.
  4. Earbuds / Headphones — Banned inside the temple.
  5. Camera / DSLR — Banned. Photography is strictly prohibited.
  6. Leather Belt — Leather items of all kinds are prohibited. Wear a cloth or elastic belt.
  7. Leather Wallet — Use a cloth pouch instead.
  8. Leather Bag — Use a cotton jhola or cloth bag.
  9. Expensive Jewellery — Attracts touts and pickpockets. Keep it simple.

About Your Mobile Phone

Your mobile phone is a special case. It is banned inside the temple, but you need it for navigation, ride-hailing, and emergencies throughout the day.

The Solution: The temple administration provides official mobile deposit counters (locker stands) near the Singhadwara (Lion Gate) entrance. These are government-managed and charge a nominal fee of ₹5 to ₹10. You deposit your phone, receive a numbered token, and collect it after darshan.

Critical Warning: Only use the official counters with proper signage. Do not hand your phone to random individuals claiming to offer “safe storage.” Every year, there are reports of tourists losing phones to fake storage operators.

The Emotional Preparation

This might sound unusual for a travel guide, but it needs to be said. Visiting Jagannath Puri is not like visiting a monument or a museum. It is a deeply personal, often overwhelming spiritual experience. The sheer scale of the temple, the deafening sounds of bells and conches, the press of thousands of bodies, and the sudden, fleeting glimpse of the deities on the Ratna Simhasana — it hits you in a way that no amount of planning can prepare you for.

For your mother, this may be a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Let her set the pace. If she wants to stand in the general queue instead of rushing through, let her. If she wants to sit quietly in the Nata Mandira (dance hall) and absorb the chanting, let her. The temple has existed for nearly nine centuries. It will wait for you.

Your job today is not to be a tourist. It is to be a son.

The Strategic Decision: Your Morning Timeline

Based on everything above, here is the optimised timeline for your Saturday morning:

TimeAction
4:30 AMWake up. Wash face. Final packing check.
4:45 AMLight breakfast — a banana, biscuits, and water. Do not eat heavy food before a long travel + temple visit.
5:00 AMStep out of Lane 5. Pre-arranged auto should be waiting.
5:05 AMDepart Niladri Vihar in auto-rickshaw.
5:30 AMArrive at Bhubaneswar Railway Station (Platform 1 side / Master Canteen entrance).
5:30 - 6:45 AMBuy unreserved tickets, have tea at the station, wait for train.
6:45 AMBoard the early morning train to Puri.

This timeline gives you a comfortable buffer at every stage. You are never rushing, never stressed, and your mother gets to start the day at a gentle pace.

In Part 2, we will dive deep into the Train vs. Bus debate, with exact train numbers, departure times, platform details, ticket costs, and the compelling reasons why the train is the undisputed champion for this particular Saturday morning in May 2026.
