Part 29: Accommodation Options — If You Decide to Stay Overnight

Your primary plan is a day trip — leave Bhubaneswar early morning, return by night. But what if plans change? What if your mother is too tired for the evening train? What if you want to catch the Mangala Aarti at 5:00 AM the next morning? Having a backup accommodation plan is prudent.

Budget Accommodation Near the Temple

Dharamshalas (Religious Guest Houses)

Puri has dozens of dharamshalas — charitable guest houses operated by religious trusts, community organisations, and state government bodies. These are the cheapest accommodation option.

Booking: Most dharamshalas do not accept online bookings. You walk in and ask for availability. On a Saturday night in May, availability is generally good (it is off-season).

Where to Stay

Near the Temple: Rooms within 500m of the Singhadwara are the most convenient for early morning darshan. They are also noisier and more basic.

Near the Station: Rooms on Station Road are quieter and closer to your departure point (the railway station). Slightly cheaper.

Near the Beach: Hotels along the Marine Drive and CT Road offer beach views but are 1-2 km from the temple.

When an Overnight Stay Makes Sense

1. If your mother is exhausted by 4:00 PM and cannot handle the evening train
2. If you want Mangala Aarti at 5:00 AM Sunday morning (the most serene darshan)
3. If trains are cancelled or delayed — which can happen during summer thunderstorms
4. If you want to visit Raghurajpur on Sunday morning (14 km from Puri)

When to Avoid Staying Overnight

1. During Rath Yatra or major festivals — Prices multiply 3-5x, rooms are scarce
2. If you did not bring overnight essentials — No change of clothes, no toiletries
3. If your mother’s medication is at home — Critical for elderly travellers

Quick Booking Strategy

If you decide mid-day that you need to stay:

1. Open the OYO or Goibibo app on your phone
2. Search for rooms in Puri with “Tonight” check-in
3. Filter by: ₹500-₹1,000 range, near “Jagannath Temple” or “Station Road”
4. Book and pay via UPI
5. Walk to the hotel or take an auto
