Part 03: PhD with Stipend in India — Complete Fellowship Guide
Series: Degrees While Working India | Previous: Part 02 — IGNOU MBA | Next: Part 04 — GATE M.Tech Stipend
The Most Powerful Option: PhD Programs That Pay You
This is the most underrated option for B.Tech graduates in India. A PhD at an IIT or IISc does not just give you a degree — it pays you a monthly salary to study.
The government of India funds thousands of PhD students every year through multiple fellowship schemes. As a B.Tech/B.E. graduate, you are directly eligible.
The Bottom Line: A PhD at IIT Bombay with JRF pays you ₹37,000/month for the first two years, then ₹42,000/month for the next three years. Plus HRA. Plus ₹20,000/year for research expenses. Total annual income: ~₹5–6 lakhs. Completely free education.
At a Glance: All PhD Fellowships Compared

Understanding the Fellowship Structure
What Is JRF vs SRF?
When you join a PhD program with a fellowship:
Years 1–2: Junior Research Fellowship (JRF)
- Monthly stipend: ₹37,000
- HRA: 8%–24% extra depending on city
- Contingency: ₹20,000/year
- Your role: Begin coursework + research
Years 3–5: Senior Research Fellowship (SRF)
- Monthly stipend: ₹42,000
- HRA: Same as before
- Contingency: ₹25,000/year
- Your role: Full-time research + thesis
After upgrading to SRF (at most IITs):
- You appear before a committee and present your work.
- If approved, you get SRF designation and higher stipend.
- Rejection is rare if you are working sincerely.
What Does HRA Mean?
House Rent Allowance is paid in addition to the stipend.
| City Category | HRA Rate | Example |
|---|---|---|
| X cities (Mumbai, Delhi, etc.) | 24% of stipend | ~₹8,880/month |
| Y cities (Pune, Hyderabad, etc.) | 16% of stipend | ~₹5,920/month |
| Z cities (Other, including most IIT towns) | 8% of stipend | ~₹2,960/month |
If you live in hostel: HRA is not paid (subsidized hostel instead). If you rent outside: HRA is paid in addition to stipend.
Total Monthly Income for a PhD Student
| Scenario | Amount |
|---|---|
| JRF stipend (base) | ₹37,000 |
| + HRA in Z-city (hostel not availed) | ₹2,960 |
| Total monthly income | ~₹40,000 |
| After 2 years (SRF) | ~₹45,000 |
This is comparable to or higher than many TCS fresher salaries.

❌ Uncertainty — research can be slow, advisors can be difficult
❌ No guarantee of placement — depends heavily on publications
❌ Unstimulating if wrong advisor — guide quality matters hugely
Who Should NOT Do a PhD
❌ If you need high income immediately: PhD stipend is modest.
❌ If you have family obligations: PhD requires full attention.
❌ If you don't genuinely like research: PhD is miserable if you do not enjoy reading papers, running experiments, and writing.
❌ If you are doing it for money alone: Industry pays more short-term. PhD is for long-term research career.
❌ If you have no GATE score and age is over 28: Most fellowship routes close. Consider part-time PhD without stipend.
FAQs
Q: I am 23 years old at TCS. Can I still do a PhD?
A: Absolutely. 23 is ideal for PhD. You have:
- Time to prepare for GATE (6–12 months).
- Age under 28 (maximum for most JRF fellowships).
- Enough experience to write a research motivation letter.
Q: Do I have to have a master's degree to do a PhD at IIT?
A: No. IITs accept B.Tech graduates directly into PhD. You need a GATE score and pass the IIT-specific test/interview.
Q: Can I do PhD from an IIT while staying in Bhubaneswar?
A: For a stipend-based full-time PhD: You must physically relocate to the IIT campus. IIT Bhubaneswar (at Argul) is the only IIT in Bhubaneswar.
For part-time/sponsored PhD: Some IITs allow occasional visits. Ask specifically at IIT Bhubaneswar or IIT Kharagpur.
Q: Will TCS give me NOC for part-time PhD?
A: Many IT companies including TCS have policies for higher education. Contact your HR department or people manager. There is no universal TCS policy — it depends on your project and manager.
Q: What GATE score do I need for IIT PhD?
A: For PhD admission at top IITs (IITD, IITB, IITM), a GATE score above 750–800 (CS paper) is competitive. For IIT Bhubaneswar, IIT Patna, and newer IITs, lower scores may work.
Q: What if my GATE score is low but I want to do a PhD?
A: Options:
- Apply to NITs (NIT Rourkela, NIT Bhubaneswar) — less competitive.
- Apply to Central Universities (Hyderabad, DU, BHU).
- Get UGC-NET JRF after completing a master's degree.
- Apply to part-time PhD (no GATE needed, no stipend).
Q: Is a PhD in CS from IIT Bhubaneswar as good as from IIT Bombay?
A: All IIT PhDs carry the "IIT" brand. IIT Bombay is ranked higher globally and has more alumni connections. IIT Bhubaneswar is newer (est. 2008) but fully recognized. For research quality, the advisor matters more than the IIT's ranking.
