What Is AEDP?

The Apprenticeship Embedded Degree Program is a revolutionary concept introduced by UGC that embeds formal apprenticeship into a university degree.

In traditional education: You study for 3–4 years, then get a job.

In AEDP: You study AND work simultaneously, earning a stipend for the work component, which is embedded as credits in your degree.

The Key Principle

Up to 50% of your degree credits can be earned through apprenticeship under AEDP. The remaining 50% is taught in the university classrooms/online.

This means if your degree has 120 credits:

  • 60 credits from university (classroom/online)
  • 60 credits from apprenticeship (on-the-job learning)

And you get paid for the apprenticeship component.

How the Money Works

Who Pays the Stipend?

Under the NAPS (National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme):

ComponentPayer
50% of stipendGovernment of India (through MSDE)
50% of stipendEmployer (the company where you apprentice)

Minimum Stipend Amounts

CategoryMinimum Monthly Stipend
Graduate and Technician₹9,000/month
Technician (Vocational)₹7,700/month
Trade Apprentice₹6,500–₹7,500/month

In practice, many companies pay more than the minimum. IT companies in India typically pay ₹10,000–₹25,000/month for graduate apprentices.

The NATS Scheme

NATS (National Apprenticeship Training Scheme) is specifically for graduate and diploma holders:

  • Portal: nats.education.gov.in
  • Ministry: MSDE (Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship)
  • Who qualifies: Graduates and diploma holders from engineering, science, and technology programs

Under NATS:

  • Government pays ₹4,500/month (50% of ₹9,000 minimum)
  • Employer pays ₹4,500/month (or more)
  • Total apprentice receives: Minimum ₹9,000/month

The Tripartite Agreement

AEDP works through a formal three-party legal agreement:

Three Parties in AEDP:
1. Student (The Apprentice)
2. University/College (Academic Institution)
3. Employer (Industry/Organization)

Agreement Terms:
├── Student agrees to: complete academic + apprenticeship components
├── University agrees to: recognize apprenticeship as credits,
│ issue final degree
└── Employer agrees to: provide on-the-job training,
    pay stipend, follow NAPS/NATS guidelines

This agreement makes the degree valid and the apprenticeship legally recognized as part of the academic program.

Which Degrees Can Be Done Under AEDP?

AEDP applies to undergraduate and postgraduate programs at NAAC-accredited institutions.

Undergraduate Programs (for fresh students)

ProgramDurationApprenticeship Credits

Which Institutions Currently Offer AEDP?

As of 2025-26, AEDP is still being adopted by institutions. The early adopters include NAAC A/A+ rated universities.

How to Check

  1. Visit: ugc.gov.in → Regulations → AEDP guidelines
  2. Visit the university's website you plan to join.
  3. Contact the IQAC (Internal Quality Assurance Cell) of the university.
  4. Ask specifically: "Do you offer Apprenticeship Embedded Degree Program under UGC regulations?"

What to Look For

Universities implementing AEDP will have:

  • A dedicated AEDP cell or coordinator
  • Agreements with industry partners
  • Clear credit mapping for apprenticeship
  • Registration with NATS/NAPS portals

NATS Portal — The Key Entry Point

NATS (National Apprenticeship Training Scheme) is the government portal that connects apprentices with employers.

For Students: How to Register on NATS

  1. Visit: https://nats.education.gov.in
  2. Click: "Registration for Students/Apprentices"
  3. Fill: Personal details, educational qualification
  4. Upload: Degree/diploma certificate, photo ID
  5. Select: Preferred locations, sectors, companies
  6. Submit: Application

What Happens Next

  1. Employers on NATS portal browse your profile.
  2. You can also apply directly to listed establishments.
  3. If selected: Tripartite agreement signed.
  4. Apprenticeship begins. Stipend paid monthly.

Employers on NATS

Thousands of companies are registered on NATS including:

  • TCS, Infosys, Wipro, HCL, Tech Mahindra
  • BHEL, SAIL, ONGC, IOCL
  • DRDO labs
  • State government departments
  • Private engineering companies

NAPS Portal — For Non-Graduate Apprentices

NAPS (National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme) is similar but covers all categories including trade apprentices.

Portal: https://msde.gov.in/naps

NATS is specifically for graduate apprentices (most relevant for you).

Step-by-Step: Using AEDP as a Working Professional

Scenario: You Want to Do MBA with Stipend

  1. Choose an AEDP-enabled university offering MBA.
  2. Get admission in their MBA program (AEDP track).
  3. Register on NATS as a student apprentice.
  4. Find an employer willing to hire you as a management apprentice (could be your current employer TCS — check!).
  5. Sign tripartite agreement: You + University + Employer.
  6. Complete both: MBA coursework (online/evening) + Apprenticeship (daytime at company).
  7. Receive stipend: ₹9,000–₹25,000/month during program.
  8. Get MBA degree: Credits from both classroom + apprenticeship.

Can TCS Be My Apprentice Employer?

Technically yes, if:

  • TCS is registered with NATS/NAPS portal.
  • TCS HR agrees to the tripartite arrangement.
  • Your existing TCS role qualifies as "apprenticeship" work.

Check: TCS L&D or HR department about NATS registration. Large IT companies often register on NATS for their own employee development or fresh graduate hiring.

The AEDP advantage: You effectively get paid to earn your degree.

Limitations and Honest Drawbacks

Limited availability: Not all universities have implemented AEDP. It is a newer concept and adoption is gradual.

Coordination required: Managing three parties (you, university, employer) is complex.

Employer must cooperate: If TCS does not agree to the NATS arrangement, you need another employer.

Physical presence needed: Unlike pure distance education, AEDP requires you to be at the employer site.

Quality of apprenticeship varies: Some employers may not provide meaningful training; it may just be paperwork.

Limited research: There is limited published data on how many students have successfully completed AEDP degrees.

Who AEDP Is Best For

Fresh B.Tech graduates who want to pursue a PG degree immediately while also earning.

Workers who can negotiate their current employer into the tripartite agreement.

Career changers who want formal credentials + industry experience in a new domain simultaneously.

Students of NAAC A/A++ institutions that have already implemented AEDP frameworks.

FAQs

Q: Is AEDP valid for UPSC or government jobs?

A: If the degree is from a recognized university and awarded under UGC regulations, it should be valid. The AEDP is a specific mode of delivery, not a different type of degree. Your degree certificate will not say "AEDP" — it will be a standard MBA/M.Tech/etc. Always verify with the specific employer/government body.

Q: Does TCS count as an employer under NATS?

A: TCS is listed on NATS as an employer in many IT categories. Check https://nats.education.gov.in for TCS's current registration status and apprenticeship categories.

Q: What is the minimum duration of apprenticeship?

A: Under AEDP, the apprenticeship component can be up to 50% of the total program credits. For a 2-year MBA (say 120 credits), this means up to 60 credits of apprenticeship. Minimum duration depends on the specific university's curriculum.

Q: Is the stipend tax-free?

A: Apprenticeship stipends may be exempt from income tax under Section 10(16) of the Income Tax Act (scholarship/stipend exemption). Consult a tax professional for your specific case.
