What Is the GATE M.Tech Stipend?
When you secure admission to a full-time M.Tech program at any AICTE-approved institution with a valid GATE score, you are entitled to a scholarship/stipend of ₹12,400/month.
This stipend is paid by the Ministry of Education (formerly HRD) via AICTE for students in:
- IITs (all 23)
- NITs (all 31)
- IIITs (National Importance ones)
- Other Centrally Funded Technical Institutions (CFTIs)
Important: This stipend is NOT available for:
- Sponsored category students (company-sponsored)
- Part-time M.Tech students
- Students at non-AICTE institutions
- Students without GATE scores
Why This Path Is Powerful for General Category
For a general category B.Tech graduate, the GATE-based M.Tech stipend is one of the few ways to get paid to study without being in a PhD program.
The Math:
| Month | Income from Stipend | TCS Salary Given Up (est.) |
|---|---|---|
| Every month (2 years) | ₹12,400 | ₹35,000–45,000 |
| Year 1 total | ₹1,48,800 | — |
| Year 2 total | ₹1,48,800 | — |
| 2-year total | ₹2,97,600 |
You are not getting rich on ₹12,400/month. But combined with:
- Free tuition at IIT/NIT
- Free or subsidized hostel
- Mess/food subsidies
- The IIT/NIT degree brand
...it is a very compelling package.

The Sponsored M.Tech Alternative
If you don't want to leave TCS or can't clear GATE:
What Is Sponsored M.Tech?
A Sponsored M.Tech is when your employer (TCS) sponsors you to study at an IIT/NIT. You continue to receive your TCS salary while studying.
Key features:
- Salary continues: TCS pays you during the program.
- No GATE required: Some IITs accept sponsored candidates without GATE (they have separate entrance tests).
- No AICTE stipend: Sponsored candidates do not get the ₹12,400 AICTE scholarship.
- NOC required: TCS must provide a No Objection Certificate.
- Duration: Usually 3 years (part-time) or 2 years (full-time sponsored leave).
IITs Accepting Sponsored M.Tech
| IIT | Sponsored Category? | Notes |

How to Apply for Sponsored M.Tech
- Check if TCS has an MOU with the specific IIT.
- Get your manager's approval and HR's NOC.
- Apply through the IIT's sponsored candidate portal.
- Appear for the IIT-specific entrance test (if no GATE score).
- If selected, get admission letter.
- Continue working at TCS while studying.
TCS Education Policy: TCS has tie-ups with several IITs for sponsored education. Check TCS iEvolve portal or speak to your L&D (Learning & Development) team.
GATE Preparation Strategy for Working Professionals
As someone currently working full-time at TCS, preparing for GATE requires a systematic approach.

FAQs
Q: I have a GATE score from 2022. Is it still valid?
A: GATE scores are valid for 3 years. A 2022 score is valid until 2025 admissions. For 2026 admissions, you need a score from 2023, 2024, or 2025.
Q: Can I get M.Tech stipend at a private university?
A: The ₹12,400 AICTE stipend is only available at government- funded institutions (IITs, NITs, IIITs, CFTIs). Private universities like BITS Pilani, Amity, Manipal do NOT offer this government stipend. Some private universities have their own smaller scholarships.
Q: Will my TCS experience help in M.Tech admission?
A: Work experience can help in the personal interview. But GATE score is the primary criterion. Your 2–3 years at TCS shows industry exposure, which some IIT professors value when choosing students for their projects.
Q: What if I don't clear GATE but want a good M.Tech?
A: Options:
- BITS Pilani WILP: No GATE needed, keep your job, ₹3L fees.
- IIT Kanpur Online M.Tech: Internal test, no GATE, ~₹9L.
- State technical universities: Lower bar, but also lower brand.
- Prepare and retake GATE: One more year of preparation.
Q: Is M.Tech worth it over a direct salary hike at TCS?
A: Depends on your goals:
- For research/PhD: M.Tech from IIT is the path.
- For management: MBA is better than M.Tech.
- For a 2–3x salary jump: IIT M.Tech + big tech placement = yes.
- For stability: TCS salary is steady; M.Tech involves risk.
