Part 08: Free and Nearly-Free Degrees for General Category Candidates
Series: Degrees While Working India | Previous: Part 07 — AEDP | Next: Part 09 — IGNOU All Programs
The Honest Reality Check
Let me be completely direct with you:
There is no 100% free master's degree for general category students in India through the standard enrollment route.
IGNOU, state open universities, and other institutions all charge fees — even if those fees are very low.
However, "free" has multiple meanings in education:
- Free through stipend: PhD (₹37k-80k/month), GATE M.Tech (₹12,400/month), AEDP (₹9k+ month). These PAY you to study.
- Free through scholarship: Certain merit + need based scholarships cover your fees.
- Near-free: Fees so low they are negligible compared to your salary (₹18,000 for a 2-year MA degree = ₹750/month).
- Free study material: Learn for free even without enrollment (eGyanKosh, NPTEL, SWAYAM).
This post covers all four categories.
Category 1: Completely Free (You Get Paid)
These are programs where your education costs nothing AND you receive a monthly income.
Option A: PhD at IIT/IISc with GATE (JRF)
- What you pay: ₹0 (free tuition, free hostel optional)
- What you earn: ₹37,000–42,000/month
- Degree: PhD from IIT/IISc
- Requirement: Valid GATE score + pass PhD admission
- Duration: 4–5 years
- Open to General Category: Yes — purely merit-based
Option B: PhD with PMRF
- What you pay: ₹0
- What you earn: ₹70,000–80,000/month + ₹2L/year
- Degree: PhD from IIT/IISc
- Requirement: IIT/NIT/IISER graduation + CGPA ≥ 8.0
- Duration: 5 years
- Open to General Category: Yes — purely merit-based
Option C: GATE M.Tech at IIT/NIT (Stipend)
- What you pay: ₹0 (or minimal lab/hostel fees)
- What you earn: ₹12,400/month (AICTE stipend)
- Degree: M.Tech from IIT/NIT
- Requirement: GATE score
- Duration: 2 years
- Open to General Category: Yes — merit-based
Option D: AEDP with NATS Apprenticeship
- What you pay: University fees (reduced by credits from work)
- What you earn: ₹9,000–25,000/month
- Degree: Regular degree (MBA, M.Tech, etc.)
- Requirement: NAAC-accredited AEDP institution + employer
- Open to General Category: Yes
Verdict: For general category candidates, the true "free
- earn" path is through GATE → IIT M.Tech or GATE → IIT PhD.

FAQs
Q: Can I get a completely free degree without giving up my job?
A: Not through traditional enrollment (you must pay fees). But through the PhD/GATE M.Tech route (which requires leaving TCS), you get free education + stipend. The tradeoff is leaving your job temporarily.
Q: Is OSOU recognized by the central government?
A: OSOU is a state university recognized by the University Grants Commission. However, for each program, you must verify DEB (Distance Education Bureau) approval specifically. Visit deb.ugc.ac.in to check.
Q: Can I do two degrees simultaneously?
A: UGC allows one full-time degree and one part-time/online degree simultaneously (UGC circular 2023). So you can pursue an IGNOU MA while working at TCS — as long as you don't also pursue another formal full-time degree simultaneously.
Q: Which is better: IGNOU MA or OSOU MA?
A: For brand value nationally: IGNOU. IGNOU is a Central University; OSOU is a state university. However, OSOU may have lower fees and better regional support for Odisha residents.
