Part 06: All Government Research Fellowships — CSIR, UGC, DST, DBT, ICMR
Series: Degrees While Working India | Previous: Part 05 — PMRF | Next: Part 07 — AEDP Apprenticeship
Why This Matters
India's central government funds thousands of PhD students every year through various ministries. Each ministry has its own fellowship exam, eligibility criteria, and application process.
If you want to do a PhD in India and get paid for it, you must understand these fellowships. They are the primary mechanism by which the government pays scholars.

FAQs
Q: Can I hold both GATE score and CSIR-NET JRF at the same time?
A: Yes. Having both gives you maximum flexibility. GATE for M.Tech/PhD at IITs, CSIR-NET JRF for CSIR labs or other universities. You can apply to institutions using either.
Q: How many attempts do I get for CSIR-NET/UGC-NET?
A: There is no limit on attempts. However, JRF eligibility has an age limit (28–30 years). After the age limit, you can still qualify for Lectureship/Assistant Professor eligibility through the same exam.
Q: Can I apply for CSIR-NET if I have 3 years of TCS experience?
A: Yes, but your age limit still applies. If you are 25 with 3 years experience and under 28, you can apply for CSIR-NET JRF. Work experience does not reduce your eligibility.
Q: What is the difference between JRF and NET (Lectureship)?
A: JRF qualifies you for PhD fellowship (stipend). NET/LS (Lectureship) qualifies you to apply for Assistant Professor positions at colleges and universities. The JRF cutoff is higher than the LS cutoff.
Q: Which fellowship allows me to join a university outside my state?
A: All central government fellowships (GATE JRF, CSIR-NET, UGC-NET) are national in scope. You can use them at any recognized Indian university, regardless of your home state.
